Northridge, California is a small neighborhood with a large population. In fact, it is just shy of being 9.5 square miles, but boasts a population of over 57,000 residents! Located in Los Angeles County, Northridge is home to California State University Northridge, which is likely why the median age of individuals is between 19 and 32 years of age.

Gifted Education Northridge | Oak Crest AcademyThe residents of Northridge know that education is key for a successful future. That is why it is important to understand what makes gifted and exceptional children decide to leave school. Here are a few ways to prevent that from happening:

– Recognize their potential. If you see that your son or daughter is distracted easily in the classroom, scoring high above others on standardized tests, and/or complains of being bored at school, it is time to intervene. Do not wait until it is too late.

– Be a pillar of support. Your kids always need you. However, when they feel they are struggling in a particular area, they will need you even more. Be there for them. Take some time out of your day to spend with your child – one on one. Find a quiet place to visit, such as CSUN’s Orange Grove pond. This park area will allow you to talk, feed the ducks and turtles, and breathe the fresh, outside air. Or, just spend some fun quality time with your child, such as visiting Skateland in Northridge.

– Engage your child with peers. Exceptional children can often have difficulty relating to their peers. It is important to not force these interactions, but that doesn’t mean you cannot work to set up easier social situations. For example, finding a group of like-minded individuals can ease the social burden for your child.

– Find the proper school for your child. Being bored in school is not going to do anything but make the student want to leave. It will be viewed as a waste of time. Besides, what is the purpose of a school that doesn’t challenge your gifted student?

Be an active parent in your child’s life. This will make it easier to make the necessary changes when you see that something is amiss. Talk with your child, support him or her, and help your child develop friendships and nurture them. These are all important for future success. You are your child’s number one fan!
